What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

I had a deep relationship with the trumpet. I really loved it. My embouchure was said to be magnificent.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

I loved everything from boy bands to rock n roll. If I had a way to get vinyl records I was listening to everything.

What was the first album you remember owning?

Mariah Carey’s Daydream cassette it was my religion.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

Oh this is tough but I would have to say beautiful ones by Prince.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

I trust myself to be open to receive things. I freestyle 40% of my music at times to keep myself sharp. So If you come to a show you’ll hear a song that’s never been written before that moment. It’s my improv theater background. I’m so grateful to have.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

I’d have to say Silk Sonic (anderson paak and Bruno mars) is and are one of my favorite groups. They are just a beautiful combination of soulful art. They gave me a boost and they put on a heck of a show.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

The Roots.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

The emotional connection you get to share with people is powerful. There’s a universal sense even when you can’t communicate in the same language music breaks through. It’s mind blowing. I’ve always said if I had a superpower it would be to speak every language and music is the tool I’ve been using this whole time to make community.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Believing that my time hasn’t passed that I still have something wonderful to say. That I’m in the right place and that I have value despite what my stats or the algorithms tell me.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Keep on inventing yourself and find your thing, and don’t be afraid to show up and show out. It’s your story and no one else’s.
