Getting To Know... The Ingrid

In a small rehearsal room in Chichester, three students were quietly building a world. Now, that world comes into focus with 'Limerence', the haunting debut single from The Ingrid, a band as fearless in their sound as they are in their vision.

Formed by Jess Charleslyn, Will Hornsblow, and Josh Platt, The Ingrid blend the emotional charge of shoegaze with the melodic sharpness of dream-pop and modern indie. Their debut is a slow burn, equal parts surrender and clarity, a meditation on obsession, self-sabotage, and the fragile beauty of acceptance.

So with the new single available now, we sat down with them to find out more about their origins and what has inspired them most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

Josh: I actually started off with brass (trombone, Tenner horn), and bounced around between about seven instruments before falling in love with the drums!

Jess: For me that was definitely piano and I still love it just as much now. I also remember learning the ukulele when I first started writing before going on to guitar!

Will: I started playing guitar when covid hit as a way to get out of the covid boredom and fell in love playing when i learned to play classic rock songs like sunshine of your love, you really got me, and should i stay or should I go.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

Josh: Classic rock, anything with a busy rhythm guitar.

Jess: I loved my singer songwriters such as Dodie. I think that’s what really inspired me to write my own music.

Will: I listened to whatever was on the radio when I was younger. It was only until sixth form when I started to listen to oldies and new rock.

What was the first album you remember owning?

Josh: The guardians of the galaxy awesome mix vol. 1 on cassette.

Jess: I believe it was either Red by Taylor Swift or Sticks and stones by Cher Lloyd on CD.

Will: Alt J, an awesome wave, this album was the first time i had heard music which wasn’t my normal genre, it opened my eyes to whole new side of music in which i try to draw from.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

Josh: always a woman to me by Billie Joel.

Jess: I kicked a boy by the Sundays.

Will: Conditon II by Chalk

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

Josh: A good walk always jogs my mind.

Jess: I sit down at the keyboard or with a guitar and play around with some chords which usually acts as a channel for me to convey the emotion I’m feeling within the lyrics.

Will: To be honest i usually write while i’m in my feels and try to draw off that emotion, sounds cliche but does help portray the sound and feel of a song.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Josh: Ethel Cain

Jess: The Marías and After!

Will: Sticky Fingers, they have been on my repeat for years now I love their sound and their feel.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Josh: Ethel Cain

Jess: Phoebe Bridgers

Will: Sticky Fingers, it’s a life long dream to perform either supporting or with the band.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

Josh: A creative outlet, and the hope of creativity being a key part of my working life.

Jess: When a song resonates with someone and they can make it their own, I think art becomes really cool when it becomes shared.

Will: honestly i think it’s the thought that other musicians can draw inspiration and ideas from something I've done.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Josh: music software!

Jess: The challenge of trying to be heard and get out there. Especially because to be a musician these days you almost have to be an influencer too. I find that takes time and energy away from creating the actual music you set out to make in the first place.

Will: when i’ve come up with the best concept for a song and can’t find the right chords or lead line for it, to end up moving on to other ideas.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Josh: Don’t worry about what you think you should be writing, Write what you feel.

Jess: Don’t focus on trying to write like someone else, just write like you.

Will: learn to play in your own style and don’t try to hard to be someone who you may admire but doesn’t resonate with your own values.
