What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

The first instrument that captured my heart was the guitar. There has always been a special place in my heart for string instruments, and I even dabble in playing the guitar myself. I have written and recorded a few songs where I play the guitar, but they hold a vulnerable side of me that I have been hesitant to share. However, I am considering releasing some demos in the near future.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

During my younger years, I developed a deep appreciation for genres like Jazz, Hip-Hop, and traditional neo-soul. These genres resonated with me on a profound level, and I still carry that love for them to this day. They continue to be an integral part of my musical journey and influence my creative expression.

What was the first album you remember owning?

This question brings back some fond memories. It's actually quite amusing because I was incredibly protective of this album. The first album I ever owned was the Cheetah Girls soundtrack, and it had a significant impact on me. It played a crucial role in shaping my aspirations to become a performer, songwriter, and singer. I absolutely adored the Cheetah Girls and their music. Witnessing black girls passionately pursuing their dreams had a profound influence on me as a young girl, as it made me believe that I, too, could achieve my dreams. It instilled in me a sense of possibility and inspired me to pursue my own musical path.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

One R&B song that holds a special place in my heart is "When You Touch Me" by Brandy. It's not just a favorite of mine; it's my absolute favorite R&B song. The fact that it was written by the legendary Babyface adds even more to its appeal. I often find myself wishing that I could have recorded this song myself because it resonates with me on a deep level. From the impeccable vocal production to the overall musical arrangement, I have immense admiration for every aspect of it. One thing I particularly miss in today's music landscape is the presence of bridges in songs. They used to be such powerful and emotional moments, and it's disheartening to see them less prevalent nowadays. I genuinely believe that bridges can elevate a song to another level, and their absence is something I find quite devastating.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

As part of my creative process, I have developed a few rituals that help me connect with my emotions and enter a focused state of mind. One of these rituals is burning Palos Santos, which not only creates a soothing ambiance but also helps me find a sense of grounding. I also enjoy making a cup of tea, which has a calming effect on me and allows me to relax and reflect.

When it comes to my songwriting approach, I've recently adopted a new practice. Instead of pre-writing before entering the studio, I challenge myself to write in real time, in the moment. This means I fully embrace and channel whatever emotions I'm experiencing at that particular time. It has been a transformative experience for me so far, as it allows me to capture raw and authentic emotions in my music.

By writing in real time and creating in the moment, I feel more connected to the essence of my emotions and experiences. It brings a certain level of honesty and vulnerability to my music that I find incredibly empowering. This approach has opened up new avenues of creativity and has truly shaped my artistic journey in profound ways.

Who are your favorite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Currently, I find myself drawn to a diverse range of talented artists who inspire and captivate me. Some of my favorite artists at the moment include:
- Khamari, whose soulful and expressive vocals resonate deeply with me.
- The three-piece band called grouptherapy, whose unique sound and captivating melodies have caught my attention.
- Q, whose lyrical prowess and storytelling abilities never fail to impress me.
- Planet Giza, a group that effortlessly blends genres and creates a refreshing sonic experience.
- Amaria, whose mesmerizing voice and emotive songwriting leave a lasting impact.
- Ambre, an artist who brings a refreshing perspective to R&B and consistently delivers captivating music.
- Babyrose, whose hauntingly beautiful melodies and introspective lyrics create an enchanting atmosphere.
- And lastly, my fellow Chicago natives Jaywood & Femdot, who showcase their immense talent and contribute to the vibrant music scene of our city.

These artists all bring something unique to the table, and their music resonates with me on a personal and creative level. I find inspiration in their artistry and appreciate the diverse range of sounds and perspectives they bring to the music industry.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

When it comes to artists who I feel a strong connection to and believe would be a great match for collaboration, two names come to mind: Doja Cat and Janet Jackson.

In both cases, the combination of their high energy, diverse catalog, and my own artistic vision makes me confident that a collaboration with either Doja Cat or Janet Jackson would not only make sense but also result in an exciting and memorable musical experience for both the artists involved and our fans.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

Creating music provides me with a powerful outlet for my creativity and voice. It allows me to express thoughts and emotions that I may not share openly. Singing brings me immense joy and a sense of liberation. It's during these moments that I feel most at peace and in alignment with my purpose.

And what is the most frustrating part?

I have been singing for as long as I can remember, and I believe that I am only beginning to tap into the potential of my dreams. The journey can be frustrating at times, as I have a strong desire to become a major star. However, I am learning to appreciate the process and find joy in the journey itself, rather than being solely focused on the destination. Being a musician brings me immense happiness, and I am grateful for the gift of being able to pursue my passion every day.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

The most valuable advice I've received is to always remember my initial motivation for singing and to never allow my ego to overshadow my true identity. Furthermore, I've learned that believing in myself is essential to achieving success. It's not the responsibility of others to see the vision I have for my gifts and life; I must have unwavering belief in myself first. If my desires are rooted in misguided reasons, they won't be sustainable in the long term. This advice has consistently reminded me to stay true to myself and has been instrumental in my journey.
