Getting To Know... Maddi Jane

After first making her mark as a YouTube pioneer at the age of eleven, LA-based singer and songwriter Maddi Jane is still very much on the scene as she delivers her latest single 'Butterfly Effect'.

Much like all of her work to date, 'Butterfly Effect' sees her explore the more euphoric side of the pop sound. Filled with a dynamic production, sweeping songwriting, and some beautifully powerful vocals at the helm, her latest effort shows us that she is very much on course to become the next big thing.

So with the new single out and about, we sat down with her to find out more about her origins and what has been inspiring her most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

I took Suzuki piano lessons when I was 4yrs old which was great ear training. That really unlocked my songwriting skills in middle school and that’s what I loved the most.

What has been the most prominent inspiration behind your music so far?

The inspiration behind my music is the belief that we are all capable of more than we think. I’m constantly pushing myself to create better and learn more. I figure if I blaze this trail, others will believe in themselves too. Songwriting wise, my inspiration is Maisie Peters. And production wise, it’s Jon Bellion.

What kind of music did you love as a teenager?

I loved Paramore, and Rihanna. Anything with soul!

What inspires you to make music?

The people around me. I live in a community home in LA. People write poems all the time and ask me to put beats to it, it’s pretty fun.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Alec Benjamin all day long.

How many of your songs have you written about people in your life?

I wrote a lot of love songs when I was a kid. My most recent songs have been more conceptual than personal. A goal of mine this year is to bring back those storytelling pieces specific to people in my life.

What has been the most unusual moment in your career so far?

Oh gosh. Haha there’s so many to choose from. I had ridden in sports cars with Irv Gotti and performed for all the major labels before I was even 15. I skipped senior prank day to go to B96 Chicago. I was told by Little Wayne to never give up on myself. Also by Ellen Degenerous. And yet, I still have trouble with that.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

BlackPink! Or Adele.

If you weren’t a musician, what other path do you think you might have taken?

Probably an athlete of some sort. I love gymnastics, dance, and softball! I still apply those concepts of determination and perseverance in music though. It’s needed for sure.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

“Even if you never write another song, you’re just as amazing of a person.” Musicians are so perfectionistic, this was a huge concept for me to learn and am still learning. Also take breaks. Good things, the right way, take time. Self care is just as important as self discipline.
