What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

The piano – I used to learn songs by ear when I was younger before I started having lessons.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

Whatever my Dad’s playlist had in store for us – tended to be a lot of 80s vibes, as well as, Northern Soul, Bobby Womack, and Paul Weller’s many ventures. I also started to form my own taste in music too; loved ‘Demon Days’ era Gorillaz when I was little, that kind of thing. So quite an eclectic mix really. I still get massive comfort from listening to Weller even now.

What was the first album you remember owning?

The first album I remember owning was probably ‘Back to Black’ by Amy Winehouse. Iconic really. I remember having the CD, and I used to have a little boombox by my bed. Genuinely one of the best albums of all time, along with ‘Frank’ too.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

Easy one, ‘How to Disappear Completely’ by Radiohead. It’s as near perfect as you can get with a song. It’s one of those songs that, whenever they come on, they command you to stop what you’re doing, and listen. It’s so haunting.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

Not so much rituals, but I guess a habit is probably always starting with the lyrics. I love poetry, and I’ve written poems for a long while – my notes app on my phone is full of them. The music tends to come second, but I adapt and change the lyrics to suit the song.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

I’ve been listening to a load of Caroline Polachek and Christine and the Queens. Also, Ryan Beatty’s new album has been on repeat – all three of them contenders for AOTY in my opinion.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Easily, The Japanese House. Probably the artist with the biggest influence over my music. And the new album is already going to be perfect if the singles are anything to go by.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

Playing live, for sure, especially playing live alongside your best mates. And being introduced to so many different kinds of music.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Writer's block.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Be present.
