Getting To Know... Youth Antics

After spending the last few years releasing a wave of bright and uplifting indie-rock gems, Florida-based outfit Youth Antics returned at the start of the year to release their newest belter 'This Moment'.

Blending a mix of 80s-inspired aesthetics with modern directions, 'This Moment' makes for a fresh and upbeat comeback for the group. Jam-packed with killer hooks, a soaring atmosphere, and instantly engaging vocals, their latest release sees them enter a bright future for their sound this year.

So with the new single doing the rounds, we sat down with them to find out more about their background and what has inspired them most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

We all fell in love with our current instruments as our first ones. Mine (Derek) would be bass, Dylan and Pete’s are guitar and Cameron’s is drums.

What was the first song that inspired you to make your own music?

We all collectively got into making music together, inspired by the band Interpol. Slow Hands was one that kicked it off for us.

What kind of music did you love as a teenager?

80’s pop for sure. Cameron and Dylan listened to basically the same thing I did. Pete was into 80’s rock and metal like Iron Maiden when he grew up among other music.

What do you find is the best environment to find inspiration for your music?

Any kind of positive environment helps us with our creativity, like being around friends and fellow musicians in the local scene.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Interpol, The Strokes, Flor, Duran Duran, Tears For Fears, just to list a few.

How many of your songs have you written about people in your life?

We haven’t written any songs about any specific people but more about life experiences, looking into the future and other themes. We have a song titled Renée, but it’s actually about having trouble sleeping with thoughts keeping you up at night.

What has been the most unusual moment in your career so far?

I wouldn’t say we’ve had any personal moments that were unusual while playing in a band, but one of the cities we play often has wild chickens running around the streets. It’s the norm there.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Definitely Interpol.

If you weren’t a musician, what other path do you think you might have taken?

If not musicians, we’d all still be a part of the music industry of some sort. Sound engineers, running a recording studio, etc.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Keep practicing, choose your gigs wisely and be yourself.
