After stunning us with her terrific debut album 'There's Always Glimmer' in 2018, things were all beginning to come together for the Chicago-based singer and songwriter Gia Margaret. The frontwoman became an instant hit around the world and as a result, saw her tour throughout many countries for months on end. Sadly though, it would be that level of success that would cause her to lose her voice, making it near impossible for her to carry on in any conventional sense. But never one to cease her creative vision, Margaret returns with her second studio release 'Mia Gargaret', an ambient electronic album which sees her voice completely absent.
While it makes sense that an artist that can no longer sing would be forced to release an instrumental album, it still feels like a complete disconnect from her initial work sonically. While 'There's Always Glimmer' set her in a far more organic and rustic guise, the idea of swapping out her wistful piano and guitar playing for progressive synths seems like a strange turn to make, but then again, Gia Margaret has never seen herself as predictable. While it shares almost no semblance to her older material, it nevertheless brings out a wonderfully atmospheric side to her personality, treating us time and time again to one beautifully composed piece after another.
It is clear that the element of self-discovery on this collection is almost palpable to those listening to it. There is this almost improvised feel to 'Mia Gargaret', where we the listener, are eavesdropping on her discover a new side to herself, giving it a rather intimate feel as well. It may not be the follow-up record she envisioned for herself, but it does make for a wonderfully woozy ride.
