The Head - 'Space'

7/10

Over the last few months, we have been hearing more and more buzz surrounding Atlanta-based trio The Head. With one catchy single after another, the band are quickly making waves in their home nation, but it is their distinctly British sound that is also seeing them capture a fair bit of interest over here as well. With influences stretching throughout The Stone Roses, The Smiths, and Echo & The Bunnymen, The Head deliver their highly-anticipated debut album 'Space', a mixture of Britpop nostalgia and forward-thinking pop-rock.

'Space' seems to be one of those records you feel like you have heard before. While the band are very open in admitting their inspirations, there are moments where you feel like it is more of a homage to the UK sound than a simple influence. The album's opener 'Delusion' takes on the twinkling, psychedelic guitar sound of the early 90s vibe, while later cuts like 'Broken Scheme' sees frontman Mike Shaw adopt his best Morrissey impression.

But despite all this, 'Space' is clearly a work of love. This isn't just a band looking to copy the sound's of yesteryear, they truly feel the emotion within it and have manage to rekindle a lot of that magic on this debut full-length. Eclectic and diverse throughout, The Head have certainly made a positive first impression.
