Horse Driver - 'Horse Driver'

7/10

For their self-titled debut album, Richmond, Virginia project Horse Driver builds its sound from swirling psychedelia, hypnotic rhythms and guitar-heavy arrangements that sit somewhere between garage-rock grit and a more immersive, dreamlike strain of psych-rock. But rather than chasing immediate hooks at every turn, the album creates a mood and stays inside it.

There's a classic-rock influence running through the release. The guitars carry plenty of weight, yet the broader production keeps everything hazy and slightly unstable, allowing the songs to feel both familiar and difficult to pin down.

Repetition also becomes a part of the album's character, with rhythms and guitar lines gradually pulling us deeper into the material instead of constantly demanding attention through dramatic changes. There's a looseness to the performances that suits the psychedelic approach, making the record feel weathered rather than overly polished.

At the same time, there's enough melodic writing underneath the haze to stop the album becoming purely textural, and that balance between grit and atmosphere is where 'Horse Driver' is most convincing. The heavier moments have real physicality, while the dreamier passages give the music space to breathe.

Without a heavily defined persona surrounding the music, the songs are left to establish the world themselves. It's a concept that gives the record a more immersive feel, as though we have simply stumbled across something already in motion.

As a debut collection, it's confident without feeling overworked. Horse Driver understand that psychedelic rock doesn't always need to announce where it's going. Sometimes the most compelling approach is simply to let the guitars circle, the rhythms settle in and the atmosphere gradually take over.
