Hughes - 'Hughes'

7/10

Yellowknife’s Benji Straker steps confidently up to the plate with 'Hughes', the self-titled debut from his indie-folk project, now blossoming into a full-band vision. What began as a solitary home-recorded endeavour in Straker’s Penalty Box studio has matured into a rich, textured exploration of memory, connection, and the landscapes that shape us.

From the reimagined opening of 'Despite the Distance' to the wistful sweep of 'Passerby', the album balances intimacy with expansiveness. Each track feels rooted in love’s quiet ache, nostalgia’s bittersweet pull, and the subtle grief and joy woven through everyday life. The closing single 'The Cabin' exemplifies this balance, pairing Straker’s earnest vocals with Shea Alain’s evocative harmonies to create a space that is at once reflective and warmly inviting.

What makes 'Hughes' so compelling is the careful layering of instruments that elevate the songwriting without ever overshadowing it. Pedal steel and synths weave through keys and percussion, painting landscapes that feel as wide as the Canadian North yet grounded in personal stories. It’s a debut that wears its history openly, yet sounds entirely present, offering us a sense of both journey and homecoming.

With a collection spanning more than ten years, 'Hughes' is a testament to the evolution of a songwriter and the subtle power of collaboration, a debut that captures emotion and tenure in equal measure.
