Relationships have inspired countless records, but few examine them with the balance, subtlety and emotional intelligence found on '11 (The Art of Being a Couple'. Here, Milan-based duo I’m Not a Blonde build their latest album around the idea that lasting relationships are sustained by two whole people choosing to grow alongside one another, not disappear into each other.

Across eleven meticulously crafted tracks, Chiara Castello and Camilla Benedini deliver some of their most refined songwriting to date, blending sleek electronic production with melodies that leave a lasting impression long after the final synth fades away.

The previously released singles hinted at the album’s breadth, but heard in sequence they reveal a much richer emotional narrative. 'To Fall' glides with graceful restraint, capturing the fragile excitement that accompanies emotional vulnerability, while 'Hip Hop In The Fog' introduces a more playful rhythmic pulse without sacrificing the duo’s unmistakable sophistication. 'Scegli Me', elevated by the guest appearance of Rachele Bastreghi, provides one of the album’s most emotionally resonant moments, balancing intimacy with quiet theatricality, while 'Questa Lingua' beautifully explores the subtle distances that can emerge even between those who know each other best.

Throughout the album, I’m Not a Blonde demonstrate an enviable command of atmosphere. Their love of classic synth-pop remains unmistakable, as vintage-inspired synthesisers shimmer alongside crisp electronic percussion, while understated guitar textures and spacious arrangements prevent the production from ever becoming overly polished. There is warmth beneath the electronics, giving every track an organic emotional pulse that complements the duo’s expressive vocal performances.

Having spent the better part of a decade refining their distinctive blend of elegant electropop and art-pop experimentation, Castello and Benedini sound completely assured in their creative identity. Their experience touring alongside artists such as Franz Ferdinand, The Killers and Wolf Alice has undoubtedly sharpened their musical instincts, but '11' never feels concerned with chasing stadium-sized moments. It finds its greatest power in nuance, rewarding attentive listening through beautifully layered arrangements and understated emotional detail.

With their latest offering, I’m Not a Blonde continue to prove themselves as one of Europe’s most quietly inventive electronic acts. Rich in atmosphere, emotionally perceptive and filled with beautifully realised songs, the album offers an elegant meditation on modern relationships while delivering a collection of sophisticated synth-pop that feels equally timeless and refreshingly contemporary.
