Jess Glynne - 'I Cry When I Laugh'

8/10

If there is anyone that could be described as the connecting catalyst of popular music over the last 18 months, it is Jess Glynne. As a featured artist on three number 1 hits, including the biggest selling single of 2014, Clean Bandit's 'Rather Be', and one of her own with 'Hold My Hand', Glynne has made a name for herself as a golden ticket to the top of the charts. But now releasing her debut studio album, we are getting the full Jess Glynne experience for the very first time.

While the record is of course full of her previous hits, 'I Cry When I Laugh' is more than just a mandatory vehicle to please her record label as it shows a great level of songwriting capabilities in a whole range of styles and influences. While each track has its own space and direction on the album, the uplifting theme that runs throughout this record is a fresh and surprisingly tasteful affair as Glynne aims to bring a more respectable side to pop music and create a release that is as contemporary as it is captivating.

She may not be to everyone's taste but this debut album certainly shows the potential and progress she has made over the last few years. Her range and focus is second to none and this album will stand as one of the best pop records of the year, no doubt.
