Katie Gavin - 'What A Relief'

7/10

Throughout her time as the lead singer of MUNA, Katie Gavin has always been one to inject a more passionate approach to the indie-pop arena. Providing the much-needed gusto and flair needed to pull off her band's dynamic direction this past decade has cemented her as one of the more engaging frontwomen on the modern music scene. But as she pursues a solo career, she is now adopting a more humbled approach as she shares her eagerly-awaited debut LP 'What A Relief', a record that sees her branch out creatively and musically throughout.

Unlike her usual drive within MUNA, 'What A Relief' introduces itself as a far more tender and emotive listen. Swapping between rich and glossy pop serenades, and a rustic folk-inspired aesthetic as it plays, her first batch of solo material finds her in a wonderfully explorative guise as she looks to find an identity in which to call her own. Offering up something truly unique to what fans of MUNA would have expected, she shines and soars across this new LP in pursuit of some beautifully invigorating grooves from beginning to end.

It may be a strong departure to what her formative band is known for, but 'What A Relief' shows that these songs were always a part of her creative makeup. Oozing with fun and enjoyable moments throughout, Katie Gavin kicks off her solo career with style and finesse here.
