Kaytranada - 'BUBBA'

8/10

Even before the release of his groundbreaking debut album '99.9%' in 2016, we all knew that Kaytranada was going to be something very special. With a flurry of remixes and standalone singles to his name, we could tell that his sound and affinity for music was unlike anything we had heard before, giving him a truly unique aesthetic that bled firmly into his initial release. But after a few years to realign himself, it is clear to hear that not much has changed as the producer returns with his sophomore release 'BUBBA', a collection that continues the same fresh and vibrant direction we have always loved from him.

Much like '99.9%', 'BUBBA' is a record that puts just as much inspiration into its instrumental additions as it does on its collaborations. And while the guestlist on here is far more ramped up than his debut, inviting Kali Uchis, Pharrell Williams, Estelle, GoldLink, Tinashe and many more to jump on a track or two, he hasn't let the pressure of working with some of the world's biggest artists affect how he approaches his music. With its rich yet lo-fi style remaining a constant throughout this release, his return looks to make just as much of an impact as he did when he first emerged all those years ago.

It may have lost that initial buzz given that he is still firmly fixed to his core sound, but hearing more of this bold and expressive production just reminds us of what a sheer talent he is. 'BUBBA' is the second album so many acts wish they could pull off and gives us confidence that Kaytranada is here to stay for some time yet.
