Kinsley - 'Humans'

8/10

Few independent bands commit themselves to long-form storytelling with the conviction Kinsley display on 'Humans'. Serving as the final chapter in a four-part EP cycle, the Raleigh outfit deliver an EP that feels like the culmination of years of artistic growth. Yet even without the context of 'Angels', 'Demons', and 'Ghosts', 'Humans' stands confidently on its own as an emotionally bruising and musically expansive collection that captures the contradictions of life with striking honesty.

From the outset, crushing guitars collide with moments of startling vulnerability, while towering post-hardcore crescendos dissolve into passages of quiet reflection. But rather than relying solely on aggression, the band understand that true emotional impact comes from allowing light and shade to exist side by side.

Christopher Jones delivers one of the strongest vocal performances of the band’s catalogue. His voice carries equal measures of grit and vulnerability, moving effortlessly between restrained introspection and soaring emotional release. The lyrics explore grief, regret, fractured relationships, mental health and the relentless awareness of time passing to a craft a release that is both personal and refreshingly unguarded.

Behind the kit and mixing desk, Adam Staley deserves enormous credit for shaping the EP's identity. The production gives the heavier passages tremendous weight without sacrificing clarity, allowing intricate guitar work, layered melodies and dynamic percussion to breathe naturally throughout.

But what makes 'Humans' particularly compelling is its willingness to embrace complexity. Inspired by Carl Jung’s reflections on memory and identity, the collection constantly wrestles with opposing emotional states, where strength is found through acknowledging weakness rather than denying it. This psychological depth elevates the material beyond familiar post-hardcore themes, giving the songs an uncommon literary richness.

As the closing chapter of an ambitious creative vision, 'Humans' succeeds on every level. It provides satisfying resolution to Kinsley’s thematic journey while simultaneously announcing a band operating at the peak of its creative powers. Rich in atmosphere, fearless in its emotional honesty and packed with some of the duo’s most compelling songwriting to date, 'Humans' is the moment everything the band has been building towards finally comes together.

For those who still believe heavier music can be intellectually ambitious, emotionally vulnerable, and sonically exhilarating all at once, Kinsley have delivered one of the year’s most rewarding independent releases.
