Lorde returns with new single 'What Was That'

Lorde is back. After nearly four years out of the spotlight, the New Zealand singer-songwriter returns with 'What Was That', a striking new single co-produced with Jim-E Stack and Dan Nigro. Marking her first major release since 2021’s 'Solar Power', the track offers a fresh yet unmistakably Lorde sound—introspective, melodic, and emotionally charged.

Accompanying the release is a cinematic new music video, shot across New York City and featuring scenes in Washington Square Park, where Lorde surprised fans with a spontaneous live performance earlier this week. The video captures the track’s emotional arc with raw intimacy, matching the song’s lyrical vulnerability with unfiltered city snapshots.

'What Was That' signals a new chapter for Lorde—one that feels grounded, reflective, and quietly powerful. It’s a long-awaited return that was well worth the wait.
