Lower Than Atlantis - 'Safe In Sound'

6/10

When Lower Than Atlantis released their last studio album in 2014, the band made it very clear that if that record didn't do very well commercially, then it could well spell the end of the group as we know it. Thankfully their self-titled release went on to become one of their most successful albums to date and was seen as a pivotal moment in the UK's rock scene. Now after a longer wait than usual for new material, the band return with their fifth full-length 'Safe In Sound'.

For years now, Lower Than Atlantis have found themselves surrounded by a number of similar bands, all out to produce the same kind of music. This has led to a number of them stretching their creative wings in recent years, and 'Safe In Sound' is no exception to this trend. Right from the opener 'Had Enough', Lower Than Atlantis are aiming to give us a glimpse of their full potential, even if that doesn't come through on most of this release.

Essentially, the band have looked to create a more progressive sound that has resulted in a hit-and-miss direction. At times, it really suits their preexisting direction and other times ('Boomerang') it is just too far removed and takes you out of moment as you listen. A mixed bag with just enough good material to see you through.
