MiRET & OCHOA - 'Blue'

7/10

Some collaborations feel inevitable in retrospect. And that is certainly the case with 'Blue', the striking debut EP from Barcelona-based duo MiRET & OCHOA, a seamless fusion of electronic warmth and acoustic intimacy that manages to sound both rooted and untethered, personal and expansive.

Over the course of three meticulously crafted tracks, 'Blue' invites us into a hushed world shaped by MiRET’s analogue synths and Juan J. Ochoa’s evocative prepared piano. The result is a spellbinding dialogue between two artists with distinct vocabularies, finding common ground in silence, texture, and restraint.

Opening pieces 'Mellow' and 'The Blue Arp' drift with quiet confidence. The synths shimmer rather than shout, while the piano murmurs, with each tone treated like a breath or passing thought. There’s a patience here that feels rare. It’s not ambient as background, but ambient as invitation.

The EP’s final piece 'Broken' subtly shifts the terrain. A gentle breakbeat pulses beneath the surface, adding a sense of movement without breaking the spell. The track lingers in a bittersweet liminality, somewhere between dusk and dawn.

But what elevates 'Blue' is the clarity of its emotional intent. There’s no need for grand gestures here; the depth comes from the space between the notes, from the tension and tenderness of two artists listening as much as they’re performing. Fans of Nils Frahm, Stimming, or even the more reflective corners of Brian Eno’s work will find something to cherish.

Live, the duo have already brought this material to stages across Spain, and one can imagine how these meditative compositions bloom in real time. But even in recorded form, 'Blue' pulses with life and in music’s ability to speak quietly and still be heard.
