Mogwai - 'Every Country's Sun'

7/10

After making one hell of a comeback in 2014 with their last album 'Rave Tapes', Scottish post-rock outfit Mogwai have been very much on the offensive in the last couple of years. Becoming much more engaged in other projects, including their incredible soundtrack work for the documentary 'Atomic', the band return with their ninth studio album 'Every Country's Sun', a record that seems to perfectly display the doom and gloom of today's society.

Maybe it has come from the documentary 'Atomic' that they worked on (which explored the history of the atomic bomb), or just the sheer hell that is the daily news feed at the moment, but 'Every Country's Sun' seems to have this sense of impending doom about it, with the occasional bright spark here and there. This back and forth of emotional songwriting certainly makes for an engaging listen, but at times does feel like the album has no firm identity or agenda in its direction.

Regardless of its problems in the disposition of the record, sonically, 'Every Country's Sun' is still a throughly enjoyable listen. Tracks like 'Coolverine' and 'Brain Sweeties' are some of the band's most anthemic work in years, and certainly captures a raw emotion we can all relate to right now.
