Mont Oliver - '19'

8/10

After first hearing their debut single '19' a few months back, we became very excited about the future of this Danish trio, and now listening to their debut EP, also called '19', we can see that that excitement was more than justified. Mont Oliver have this incredibly likeable sound that seems to bring a pop sensibility to the trip-hop scene, to create this beautifully blissful intention that is just too good to ignore.

Sounding like an unlikely marriage of Massive Attack and Passion Pit, Mont Oliver's '19' is a short but varied release with solid production throughout. While the track '19' still remains the stand-out cut, the accompanying works still hold their own as fantastic tracks with powerful intent. Sounding at times like a modern hip-hop record, the vocals help reign in the sometimes overbearing energy in the material and allows the EP to fall back into a more sombre domain.

It's such a rare delight to hear quality music coming from an over-saturated electronic scene, but Mont Oliver's sound is so transcendent of its time. The three-piece have really focused on this new release and will no doubt become an important benchmark in their future development.
