Of Montreal - 'UR FUN'

7/10

While prolific bands may be having a moment this last decade, very few have managed to maintain the stamina as well as Of Montreal. First emerging in the late 90s, the group have averaged a new record almost every year since, continuing to create a broad and atmospheric world of bold synths and psychedelic tendencies at every turn. Now with frontman Kevin Barnes taking full reign for their direction, they return with their sixteenth studio album 'UR FUN', a record that looks to pack as much joy and uplifting tones into it as possible.

While many still like to think of Of Montreal as a Flaming Lips-esque outfit, this new collection sees them move a little further away from their psych-pop origins and focus more on their commercial accessibility. From the very start, 'UR FUN' looks to channel the energy of more electro-pop outfits like Passion Pit and Friendly Fires, making for a divisive but still very enjoyable listen. Barnes' own vocals seem to lead this rejuvenated feel of young and aspiring intentions that come together to form a blissful and wildly energetic return from a band that never seem to slow down.

It may not have the same instant grab factor that many of their previous releases have produced, but 'UR FUN' manages to fill itself with upbeat and exciting cuts throughout. They may have just unveiled their sixteenth LP but the spark is far from absent in their work, meaning this could be far from the last we hear from them.
