Night Shop - 'Forever Night'

7/10

Over the last few years, we have watched as the commercial indie-rock scene becomes more and more watered down, rarely perforated with the odd flair of genius from time to time. This lacklustre approach to originality has made for a tiring experience, especially for those closest to keeping the energy alive within it. But every now and again, an artist comes along to ignite some much needed fire within the belly of the genre, and that is exactly what frontman Justin Sullivan has looked to do with his Night Shop project as he returns with his sophomore studio album 'Forever Night', a record that beams with refreshing textures.

Having regularly collaborated with the likes of Kevin Morby and Waxahatchee over the years, there was never any doubt that Night Shop would be a name that fell outside the more conventional tropes. And with 'Forever Night', he has looked to take those familiar directions and ideas in order to spit out a mighty fine return. While there isn't much in groundbreaking originality on here, what he does he does exceptionally well, and creates this bright and enjoyable collection that delivers one rousing and toe-tapping cut after another.

Following on from his 2018 LP 'In The Break', those four years were certainly put to good use as 'Forever Night' packs plenty of golden moments throughout its ten tracks. A bold and driven release that feels like he is yet to really find his stride, as it bubbles over with exciting potential throughout.
