Noralyn - 'Wake the Dawn'

8/10

Five years in the making, 'Wake the Dawn' is the sound of an album that's been allowed the time to discover exactly what it wants to be.

Across ten tracks, Brisbane singer-songwriter and producer Noralyn moves between intimate piano writing, indie-folk softness, orchestral scale and art-pop experimentation, creating a record that feels deliberately varied without losing its emotional centre. At the heart of it all is a recurring pull between hardship and optimism, creating the sense that darkness and light rarely arrive independently of one another.

Opener ‘Summerland’ begins from a gentler, folk-influenced space before ‘Light’ expands the palette considerably, bringing a more dramatic, almost baroque quality into her songwriting. ‘Progress’ then suggests movement without necessarily promising certainty, while ‘Wanderlust’ opens the record into something more ethereal and cinematic.

The sequencing becomes increasingly interesting as 'Wake the Dawn' develops. ‘Fall’, ‘Hopefuls’ and ‘Praying’ form their own emotional progression, moving between vulnerability, perseverance and the desire for something beyond the immediate moment.

Later, ‘Sad Stories’ and ‘Holy War’ introduce darker language before closing track ‘You’ brings the record back towards the personal. It's a broad journey, but Noralyn’s expressive vocal delivery and piano-led foundation provide continuity even as the surrounding arrangements change.

Her classical background is also particularly valuable here. Instead of simply adding orchestral decoration to otherwise conventional pop songs, she appears more interested in dynamics, texture and small production details; the kind of choices that become clearer across repeated listens.

Ambitious, thoughtful and frequently beautiful, 'Wake the Dawn' finds Noralyn embracing the full breadth of her musical instincts. Its greatest strength is that hope never feels simplistic; it's something fought towards, track by track, until the light finally begins to show.
