OCS - 'Memory Of A Cut Off Head'

7/10

Whatever you want to call them, OCS, Thee Oh Sees, Oh Sees; you can't deny that their prolific nature has certainly gifted us some impressive material in the last few decades. But although they once again chose to change their name prior to this release, 'Memory Of A Cut Off Head' actually marks the 20th full-length this group has released, and unlike their previous album 'Orc', sees them make a callback to their original sound and style.

The name OCS was actually the first moniker the band adopted but hasn't resurfaced in twelve years, showing that this album is very much part of their original premise as a band. Going for a more lo-fi sound than the grizzled fuzz we are sometimes used to, 'Memory Of A Cut Off Head' shows them in a far more comfortable light, as they create slow yet sometimes psychedelic singles that grow into full-on jazz-rock odysseys.

They may have stepped aside from their familiar direction, but this new release certainly shows that even after twenty albums, they are far from out of ideas. 'Memory Of A Cut Off Head' sees a new lease of life in the band, and one we can all get behind.
