Patrick Watson - 'Better In The Shade'

7/10

Throughout his illustrious tenure as one of Canada's most profound and inspiring artists these last few decades, Patrick Watson has always been one to reflect the state of the world back to us through warm and vivid lyricism and textured production within his music. His beautifully alluring presence has often presented him as one of the rare gems on the international scene, regularly captivating with his wonderfully rich tones. And after some years since his 2019 LP 'Wave', he now returns with his seventh studio album 'Better In The Shade', a record that exudes broad and powerful atmosphere.

For those that know his work well, 'Better In The Shade' feels like a proficient progression of his material to date. More of that sweet and passionate aesthetic remains the staple of this new collection, as he sweeps and swoons his way through a flurry of embracing piano-led cuts. But just like his reputation suggests, it is the vibrant lyrics that has quickly become the hallmark of his latest work. Often spiritual and reflective of his own thoughts and questions about the world, he looks to connect with his listener at almost every turn, and deliver a spellbinding release, brimming with a compelling aura.

Patrick Watson has rarely faltered in his twenty year career, and 'Better In The Shade' continues that impressive streak even further. Mesmerising and shimmering throughout, this new offering really has a knack for getting under your skin and showcasing more of his inviting persona from start to finish.
