Pleasure Leftists - 'The Woods Of Heaven'

7/10

While the return of post-punk has been extremely prevalent over the last few years, hearing a DIY-style band like Pleasure Leftists does seem to hark back to the sound in its rawest form. Since producing a few scattered releases over the last year, the band's debut album looks to maintain their basic model of a stripped back, simple sound that help bring the rampant energy in this band to the forefront.

Using the odd psychedelic effect throughout, 'The Woods Of Heaven' has this distinctly nostalgic approach to production but yet keeping a contemporary focus on its songwriting. Sounding like a haunted version of The Smiths, the band have attempted to create a homage to this clearly notable influence but still maintain their own direction and create a record that is uniquely their own.

It certainly is a full-bodied and focused release as Pleasure Leftists keep their uniformed sound in check from start to finish. 'The Woods Of Heaven' is one of those records that does exactly what you'd expect, and does it well.
