POND - 'The Weather'

7/10

Although the ever-changing psych-rock outfit POND have always kept one foot in the experimental when it comes to their musical direction, this new full-length sees them take the plunge on the sometimes controversial "concept" release. Delivering a record that looks to expose the gross underworld of colonial cities all around the world, inspired by their own hometown of Perth, Australia, it definitely makes an impact from the beginning.

It is clear from the very start of the album that this is not going to be another traditional journey down the psychedelic ladder the band are known for. With the harsh electronic opening of '30000 Megatons', the record launches into this very downbeat attitude that sets the tone of the full-length's message. While it does have its moments of blissful euphoria, 'The Weather' obviously likes to see itself as a much darker record that some of its predecessors.

But just like their back catalogue to date, POND have still managed to treat us to a throughly enjoyable release. Its new ambitions may split their fanbase down the middle, but in all, this is still a great listen and shows that even after seven albums, the band can still deliver the surprises.
