Ray Curenton - 'Ripples of the Past'

8/10

Ray Curenton’s latest effort 'Ripples of the Past' is a quietly striking exploration of memory, identity, and emotional growth. Shifting from his earlier pop, R&B, and gospel work, Curenton leans into an acoustic-centred palette that feels both immediate and meditative. Across eleven tracks, he constructs an ambience that traces the echo of formative experiences, from childhood missteps to the nuanced challenges of adulthood.

The album’s strength lies in its restrained arrangements. Minimalist production by Brandon Adams allows the Nashville artist's layered harmonies and emotive delivery to take centre stage, while the delicate strumming, subtle percussion, and sparse piano underscore the narratives without ever overwhelming them. Standout tracks like 'Ground Zero' and 'Once Familiar Friend' highlight his gift for blending lyrical intimacy with folk sensibilities, while 'NFC' fuses understated modern textures into the otherwise organic framework, giving the record a contemporary edge.

Structured in three acts (Age of Minority, Age of Maturity, and Age of Majority), the album reads like a contemplative autobiography, where each song is a reflective vignette that captures both universal and personal truths. Curenton’s storytelling is direct yet poetic, offering moments of melancholy, tenderness, and quiet insight, leaving space for us to inhabit our own memories alongside his.

'Ripples of the Past' succeeds as both a musical and emotional journey. It’s an album that rewards patience, deep listening, and surrendering to the ebb and flow of his own soft-spoken but profound reflections. For fans of introspective indie-folk with a soul-infused heart, this is a record that is sure to resonate.
