Santigold - 'Spirituals'

7/10

Ever since she released her breakthrough self-titled debut album in 2008, Santigold has always been one to push the outer limits of her sound. Very much a staple of the vibrant dancehall and reggae-infused pop sound of that era, she has maintained a reputation for fresh and inventive ideals that garner a brilliantly distinctive direction that very few can be compared to. But with six years passing since her third LP '99¢', she is looking to rekindle the same fire she first emerged with on her fourth studio album 'Spirituals', a record that continues that brilliantly innovative flair.

Much like all her work to date, 'Spirituals' sees her collaborate with a wide and varied array of cutting edge producers to help bring her latest vision to life. Rostam, Boyz Noise, SBTRKT and many more all share a hand in bringing the Santigold sound back for this new decade, all adding something new and interesting to the project. While the adventurous nature of the release remains its hallmark, the general tone and energy behind it is a far more subdued one as she looks to tap into her more sombre and tender side to deliver a collection that is more than just another fast-paced flurry of blistering anthems.

While the more atmospheric nature of this new full-length certainly has its merits, it also shows us the next endearing evolution in the Santigold saga. No longer the hurricane of noise and electronics she once was, 'Spirituals' sees her in a far more confident and relaxed light, yearning to create something with more substance and longevity throughout.
