Sego - 'Direct To DVD'

8/10

There are bands who chase relevance, and then there’s Sego, who seem to light it on fire, dance around it, and then hand you their phone number just to see what happens next. With 'Direct To DVD', the LA outfit once again prove that predictability is their least favourite genre.

From the jump, this record feels like rifling through a mislabeled box of VHS tapes in a warehouse loft at 3am; scrappy, electric, slightly unhinged, and absolutely irresistible. Sego’s knack for fusing wiry guitar lines, twitchy synth textures, drum-machine punch, and elastic pop instincts is on full display. But what makes this album crackle is the spirit; a gleeful refusal to colour inside the lines.

Across the release, moods pivot sharply and often. One minute you’re caught in a glossy, hook-heavy rush that feels built for sweaty festival singalongs; the next, you’re plunged into snarling distortion and jagged rhythms that flirt with chaos. The band thrives in these collisions. Their songwriting balances mischief and melody, pairing sardonic observations with choruses that lodge in your brain before you realise what’s happened.

Sego’s history of subversive gestures, including self-aware campaigns, DIY community-building, and inviting fans directly into their orbit, bleeds naturally into this collection. You can hear a band that has spent years living and making art on their own terms. That shared creative DNA translates into tight interplay and fearless choices.

'Direct To DVD' is about momentum, experimentation, and the thrill of ideas that might not have fit anywhere else. For longtime devotees, it’s a treasure chest. For newcomers, it’s a chaotic, exhilarating entry point into Sego’s world. And honestly? It’s far too alive to be relegated to the bargain bin.
