Soulwax - 'From Deewee'

8/10

Despite returning last year to release their soundtrack for Belgian film 'Belgica', 'From Deewee' marks the first official Soulwax release of original material since 2004's 'Any Minute Now'. And while that album certainly cemented them as one of the great electronic innovators of the decade, the band have been spending most of their time on side-projects and mixtapes than anything else. But when you first hit play on this new release, it is clear that the old Soulwax is back for another round.

Although what remains the most impressive part of this new record is the fact it was all recorded live in just one take. The whole album plays like an uninterrupted live performance, creating this really impressive cohesion between each track. With a far stronger reliance on synthesisers than we have heard from them before, Soulwax have taken their initial sound and evolved it into something interesting yet still unmistakably them.

'From Deewee' certainly has the same bite that the band have always managed to convey on each of their records, and while its unending compositions do place it more as a concept release, its progressive nature allows you to find yourself lost within the beats. Creating a truly rare listening experience.
