Speedy Ortiz - 'Twerp Verse'

7/10

At the end of last year, it was announced that guitarist Devin McKnight would be leaving the band to pursue other projects. But just like any determined outfit, the remaining members quickly regrouped, recruited and moved quickly on to begin work on their next studio album. And just like their output to date, their third LP 'Twerp Verse' continues that relentless charm and wit of frontwoman and chief songwriter Sadie Dupuis.

Following on from their brilliant 2015 album 'Foil Deer', this new release aims to have a more succinct sound to its direction. Keeping the pace and flow on the straight and narrow, the record has this very easy to listen to atmosphere within it. And while singles like 'Lucky 88' and 'Villain' hold most of the interest on here, the rest of the album's content manages to hold itself well and create an album that seems more reassured in itself and delivers a more confident vibe.

It may not have the same tenacity of some of their previous work, but 'Twerp Verse' is still a thoroughly enjoyable listen. This band certainly seem more at ease in themselves now, which is obviously a great sign of things to come.
