Tugboat Captain - 'Dog Tale'

8/10

South London’s Tugboat Captain continue to leave their indelible mark on the new music scene with 'Dog Tale', a vibrant, free-spirited record born out of urgency and instinct rather than polish and perfection. Written and tracked in just seven days on their home turf at Ctrl P Studio, the album captures a band leaning fully into spontaneity, and in doing so, creating some of their most human and heartfelt work yet.

At its core, 'Dog Tale' is a patchwork of everyday observations spun into something tender and relatable. Sox, the primary voice behind the project’s storytelling, weaves an intimate narrative about finding meaning in the small, chaotic moments of city life: pest invasions in 'Rats in the Basement', nostalgic nods to local pubs in the title-track, and reflections on family, companionship, and the elusive feeling of “home.” It’s charmingly rough around the edges, full of lyrical wit and emotional vulnerability.

There’s a palpable sense of immediacy throughout this new outing, a feeling that these songs were captured at the exact right moment before they had the chance to be overthought or overworked. Josh Cobb, bassist and co-producer, highlights this beautifully by injecting a freshness into each track, making every listen feel like stepping into the room just as the magic happens.

As a result, Tugboat Captain have crafted a record that feels cozy, a little chaotic, and completely sincere; just like life itself.
