Ty Segall - 'Ty-Rex' (Reissue)

7/10

Not one to keep his fandom on the back foot, prolific singer-songwriter Ty Segall's love of Marc Bolan has been extremely apparent throughout his career. You'll usually find a T.Rex cover somewhere on one of his albums, so to cement his loving obsession with the glam rock outfit, Segall compiled all of his homages to the late Bolan in one concise album.

While it is clear that T.Rex has been a powerful influence for Ty Segall's sound, it is when you hear him cover one of their songs that the similarities really come to light. The over-distortion in his guitar and energy in his voice suddenly makes so much more sense when you hear him take on their classic tracks. And while he always attempts to add his own flair to these anthems, he never fully breaks away from his core sound and the result is a beautiful hybrid of the new and old sound of garage rock.

While he'll always be limited with choices on a covers album, hearing all these versions back to back really paints a picture of his love for this band. A brilliantly honed collection of tracks to get you ready for his new studio album next year.
