Vaudlow & Summer Fade Away - 'Get Together'

7/10

There's something fitting about two instrumental post-rock bands building a collaboration by literally passing pieces of music back and forth across continents. 'Get Together' brings Nashville duo Vaudlow together with China's Summer Fades Away for two tracks, 'Starlight Pact' and 'Buried Between', created through an exchange of musical motifs, arrangements and recordings that stretched across thousands of miles and almost a year.

For these new releases, each band began with a motif from the other, developed it, arranged and recorded around it, then sent the material back for another round of work. Multiple versions followed before the two tracks were finally completed in late summer this year. That method gives 'Get Together' an appealing sense of conversation, with neither group positioned simply as guest or host.

It's something that suits their shared musical language. Both bands work within expansive instrumental post-rock, where atmosphere, dynamics and gradual development can communicate as much as lyrics. Summer Fades Away bring the layered, cinematic approach that has shaped their work since 2008, while Vaudlow contribute the rhythmic force and melodic sweep established across their own records.

But 'Starlight Pact' and 'Buried Between' aren't presented as exercises in cultural fusion for its own sake. The collaboration feels more practical and musical than symbolic; as ideas are exchanged, reshaped and returned, with the finished compositions emerging from that repeated act of listening to one another.

The release also preserves something that will inevitably change when the bands perform the material together at Offside Festival and on their subsequent three-city tour. Post-rock often depends on scale, dynamics and the unpredictability of live performance, so these recordings capture one particular version of a relationship that will continue evolving on stage.

Here, two bands heard something in each other’s music, followed that instinct and kept working until the geographical distance stopped mattering. For music so often described as cinematic, that may be the most compelling image of all.
