Getting To Know... Patrick Keller

After years away from the studio, US singer-songwriter Patrick Keller returns with 'Winded', an 11-track debut that feels like a homecoming. Blending alt-folk sensibilities with confessional storytelling and cinematic depth, Keller crafts a sound that is both intimate and expansive, a reflection of the quiet strength it takes to keep going when life knocks the wind out of you.

Entirely self-produced and deeply personal, 'Winded' explores the tension between grief and growth, chaos and calm. From the ambient ache of 'Where Silence Feels Safer' to the resilient climb of 'Mountains', the album offers a meditative journey through hurting and healing. Influenced by the likes of Ruston Kelly and Counting Crows, Keller writes with a clarity that hits straight to the heart.

So with the new LP out now, we sat down with him to find out more about his origins and what has been inspiring him most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

Drums. Drums for sure. Those are my passions.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

When I was young I followed my older brother's music. Counting Crows, DMB, Our Lady Peace were on repeat for me. Over and over.

What was the first album you remember owning?

I remember buying my first CD (for me), Dave Matthews Band - Live in Central Park. Blew my mind.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

Probably “Hellfire” by Ruston Kelly. Such a beautiful opening, and the way it carries through. Emotional lift and drops.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

I start with just reflecting on what's been significant in my life and other's lives. I usually start with the music first, trying to craft a progression or a melody. Then, I bring the words into it. Recently, it seems like the words come first. Then the music follows.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Ken Yates, Ruston Kelly, Goose, back into 90s Alternative.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Wow, that's a huge question. Today, probably Ruston Kelly. Maybe DMB. Coldplay would be amazing.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

The therapy of creating something that expresses what's in your soul.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Sometimes the melody won't come to you. And it's like it's trying to come out but your mind, body, and soul are on different pages.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Be yourself. Authenticity matters most. Stick to who you are.
