Radiohead - 'OKNOTOK'

8/10

Usually it wouldn't be the done thing to review an album that came out 20 years ago, given that we all know how incredible good it is. But as Radiohead have added another 11 tracks onto the end of their classic 'OK Computer' release for its 20th anniversary, we are essentially dealing with a whole second record here. So with that in mind, this review will be based around those recordings and b-sides that didn't make the cut and not the original release.

Although it does seem strange listening to what are essentially new Radiohead songs, but recorded over two decades ago. Given how much the band have evolved in that time, going back to that era does have a sense of jarred intentions about it. On the one hand you have this treasure trove of brilliant offcuts, most notably 'Lift' and 'I Promise', and on the other it feels like a bit of a cash in. Nevertheless these remastered early versions certainly give us a glimpse into the world of Radiohead during what ended up being their most groundbreaking album, and show us just how prolific they were given that these works never made the cut.

But as these songs have mostly been unveiled for the sake of Radiohead's core fanbase, there is actually plenty here to inspire newcomers to their older sound. Even Radiohead's rejected songs are better than a lot of today's bands, and shows just how brilliant they were at the peak of their career.
