Nine Inch Nails - 'Add Violence' EP

7/10

Despite not releasing a new album since 2013's 'Hesitation Marks', Nine Inch Nails are still eager to share their latest works, both on last year's 'Not The Actual Events' EP and this new one, 'Add Violence'. For the last decade or so, the remaining members Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have become fully emerged in the world of film scoring, and it is that atmospheric direction that leads the intention behind this latest release.

While its opener 'Less Than' brings back all the older sounds they were known for in their infancy, the rest of the EP likes to handle itself in a far more experimental realm. Mixing darting electronics with dampened percussion, 'Add Violence' likes to imagine itself as a dark and brooding collection that sometimes build to a zenith, and sometimes not. But the anticipation of what will come next seems to be the core of this releases intentions, making for a truly engaging listen.

It may not have much in the way of any standout material, but this brief collection of productions certainly makes a statement for itself. Offering listeners an extremely immersive experience, that manages to create a real ebb and flow as it plays.
