Black Honey - 'Black Honey'

7/10

Over the years, it seemed like a debut album from the Brighton four-piece was never going to materialise. With two well-received EPs and a flurry of incredible singles under their belt, the idea of releasing a full-length LP almost seemed redundant at that point. But never ones to stick to expectations, the band look to use this first record as a reflection of their current state of mind. Only featuring singles from the last year, the album quickly highlights exactly how far they have come over the years.

With their first EP released back in 2014, the band have evolved sonically over these last few years. Combining elements of the DIY aesthetic they had at the start of their career, and incorporating a bold and explosive production, this debut release looks to see the band try something a little different, but not to alienate their devout fanbase. With tones that flip back and forth between upbeat indie and more downtrodden goth-inspired intentions, 'Black Honey' looks to represent a multifaceted angle from the group, leading to a very diverse release.

And while the eclectic nature of the album can be taken into credit, 'Black Honey' has a few lesser moments that don't quite gel into the release as well as they should. A strong and confident debut from a band we have loved for many years, but just missing that spark that will really see them make the impact they so sorely deserve.
