Cat Power - 'Covers'

7/10

Throughout her tenure as one of the world's more progressive and inventive artists, Cat Power has never been one to shy away from imprinting her own twist on a preexisting record. In fact, prior to the release of this new collection, she had already unveiled two covers albums that allowed her to pay homage to the artists that had formed her direction up until that point. But on her third covers full-length, she is looking to take her diverse aesthetic as far as it will go as she shares one of her most adventurous offerings to date.

Taking on renditions from the likes of Nick Cave, Frank Ocean, Lana Del Rey and many more, 'Covers' instantly sets itself up as a widely diverse work, especially when compared to her endeavours in recent years. But while the source material behind these songs have extremely different sonic appeals to one another, Power makes it her duty to bring these wide ranging compositions all under one bold and driven texture. Her broad and atmospheric sound becomes the core focus of this new release, allowing her to deliver her own spin on a variety of genres and creating a wonderfully succinct listen in the process.

While this has just been another chance for Cat Power to give her listeners an insight into her favourite names at the moment, 'Covers' stretches itself far and wide to find an enticing ideal that holds up much of the time. Her distinctively alluring voice rides a vibrant bed of lo-fi production, and gives her newest effort a shimmering feel throughout.
