Divorce - 'Heady Metal'

8/10

When Nottingham-based outfit Divorce released their breakthrough debut EP 'Get Mean' last year, they were quickly greeted as one of the more refreshing names to enter the UK's indie-rock landscape. Moving away from the big and blistering riffs of their contemporaries, their sound had a far more pensive and atmospheric quality, allowing them to easily stand out within the crowd. And with a whirlwind of support in the months since, they return with their sophomore EP 'Heady Metal', a release that builds upon those vibrant ideals.

While the warm and emotive direction of their previous material still remains constant here, the evolution of their songwriting is undeniable. Throughout 'Heady Metal', the four-piece throw out some wonderfully euphoric moments that adds another vital layer to their progressive aesthetic to date. Conjuring rich and shimmering textures that ebb and flow from start to finish, this new six-track collection is a brilliantly arranged and passionate listen throughout.

The band may still be working the peripheries of the scene right now, but 'Heady Metal' stands as their most engaging offering to date. Enchanting and endearing in equal measure, Divorce are definitely a name we can expect to hear a lot more from in the year ahead as well.
