Dizzee Rascal - 'Raskit'

7/10

Ever since Dizzee Rascal managed the heights of international fame with his club banger 'Bonkers', the MC has been pretty keen at continuing his path down the commercial route. But given the spotlight that grime has been experiencing again in the last few years, it makes sense that one of the scene's pioneers rejects the mainstream ambitions and return to the sound that made him a star in the first place. This is 'Raskit' in a nutshell, Dizzee showing everyone how grime is done.

It doesn't take long into this release that you realise how much the rapper clearly missed this sound. The pace and vicious intentions in his bars are something we've seen lacking from Dizzee Rascal in these recent years. The man has always had a flair for wit and malice within his lyrics, and this record sees an artist who has got plenty to vent about, whether it be false imitators of his style or more relatable conflicts like those from his past.

It may be lacking in the diversity of his former releases, namely because a lot of this album seems pretty focused in its direction that sometimes leads it down forgettable paths. But if there is anything to say about 'Raskit', it is that 'Wot U Gonna Do?' is by far the best grime single of the year so far.
