Flock Of Dimes - 'Head Of Roses'

7/10

It is hard to believe that singer and songwriter Jenn Wasner would have anywhere to go after working as part of Wye Oak. Over the year, the duo have shown themselves to be one of the most innovative and adventurous outfits working today, continuing to push the boundaries of modern pop music and create an aura of originality around them that is hard to match. But after finding solace and freedom with her first solo album 'If You See Me, Say Yes' in 2016, it seems like she has the urge to break away one again on her follow-up collection 'Head Of Roses', a record that sees her explore a multitude of ideas.

While the sound of Wye Oak stands as this constant push to remain special and distinctive throughout, Wasner's Flock Of Dimes project feels a lot less tethered to any specific aesthetic, and is more about trying out new and creative avenues. As a result, we get to hear her adopt a multitude of varied textures throughout, and explore the outer peripheries of her influences. 'Head Of Roses' is less about taking anything away from her formative roots and more about the desire to venture out and try new things, which seems to have culminated in a firm and enjoyable listen that brims with artistic merit.

It may not have the same cohesive and driven pace we are used to, but 'Head Of Roses' still gives us an insight into the inner workings of her expansive musical mind. Regularly experimenting and taking on new intentions from start to finish, it is an album that looks to surprise and amaze us with its vibrant appeal.
