Getting To Know... DACEY

After first meeting while studying at Canada's elite school Nimbus School of Recording & Media, DACEY have gone onto achieve huge things since their formation. With hundreds of thousands of streams on Spotify, as well as landing on their editorial playlists 'Fresh Finds' and 'Fresh Finds: The Wave', they now return with their latest laid-back jam 'Broccoli's Keeper'.

With a diverse range of influences that include Amy Winehouse, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, SZA, and Anderson .Paak, 'Broccoli's Keeper' brings back more of that breezy summer sound they have been getting a reputation for of late. Taking their cues from the worlds of R&B, lo-fi hip-hop, neo-soul, indie and jazz, this bright and uplifting new offering makes for a truly fine and sensual experience.

So with their new single available now, we sat down with frontwoman Dacey to find out more about her origins and what has inspired her most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

The bass.

What has been the most prominent inspiration behind your music so far?

Heartbreak. I find it hard to be confrontational often times and since music has been an outlet for me my whole life, I’m able to write songs of my experiences, then have other people listen to it and relate, and potentially the person I’m writing about gets to hear what I have to say.

What kind of music did you love as a teenager?

Motown music, funk, doo-wop, just the Goldies (golden oldies).

Can you remember the first song that made you want to pursue a life in music?

I can’t remember what exact song, but growing up watching all these artists like Michael Jackson, Beyonce, and Britney Spears on stage though a VHS tape recording made me want to get up there. If I had to pick a song, it would be ‘I want you back’ by the Jackson 5.

When you wake up in the morning, what kind of music do you like to listen to?

It really depends on the morning, most times if it’s a chill day, I’ll put on my playlist that consists of many gold oldies. It’s called “dada’s bedroom bops”.

How many of your songs have you written about people in your life?

Most of my songs are about people, past lovers, and some of them are based solely on me, and how I am when it comes to making difficult decisions.

What has been the most memorable moment in your career so far?

Being able to play a gig right after having a full on recording session. That day was entirely devoted to music, and it felt right. I could have days off just recording and having gigs right after. We played a show for ‘Vancouver’s Shitty Film Festival’ and it was an amazing experience because the crowd was lit.

Outside of music, what is your biggest passion?

Film and art are my other passions outside of music.

If you weren’t a musician, what other path do you think you might have taken?

I probably would’ve gone into the film industry, and I would’ve taken up acting, and script writing, maybe even directing.

And what advice would you give to other musicians looking to start a career in music?

My advice would be; be prepared to make nothing at all in the beginning, but work your ass off. You have to really want it if you want to be successful in the industry, so have that instinctual drive. And be patient!
