Some artists spend years searching for their creative voice. For Montréal-born, Ottawa-based artist Eau the Music, it emerged through instinct. With no formal musical training, she has written, produced and mixed her forthcoming debut album 'Light in the Dark 'entirely herself, creating a sound that blends dream pop, shoegaze and alternative rock into something both intimate and expansive.
Her debut single 'In This Silence' offers the first glimpse into that world. Rich with shimmering guitars, hazy textures and understated emotion, the track explores the uncertainty of life's in-between moments, finding beauty in stillness rather than resolution. It's an assured introduction from an artist whose music embraces vulnerability without ever losing sight of hope.
So with the new single out now, we sat down with her to find out more about her origins and what has been inspiring her most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?
I first fell in love with the electric guitar. It’s such a beautiful and strong instrument, I’ve been drawn to it since I can remember.
What kind of music did you love when you were younger?
In my teens I loved alternative rock and everything 90s grunge. When I was really young, I was also a huge fan of the Beatles and Queen (and still am).
What was the first album you remember owning?
I remember the first vinyl I ever bought. It was a used copy of John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band I found in a thrift shop.
What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?
This is hard to pin down so I’ll go with the last time I had the feeling. It was recently: I was totally mesmerized by Fallen Cloud by Austra.
Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?
I’m very lucky that creativity comes easily. I like a quiet space to get in flow. If it’s not happening, I don’t force it: maybe I’m not in the right headspace. As a general practice, I try to focus on being present in my day to day, on gratitude, and on getting enough time in nature and with the people I care about.
Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?
There are too many to list but lately I’ve been listening to Zola Jesus, Austra, No Joy, Softcult, Idles, and Taylor Swift. I’m really enjoying Metric’s new album as well.
If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?
Oh this is a tough one. I’m a huge Metric fan, I just love their vibe and values and have always loved their music. Fantasies is one of my all-time favourite albums.
What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?
I feel privileged that I can find some truths within and outside myself. But being able to transform that into music and share it in a way that might resonate with people is really rewarding.
And what is the most frustrating part?
I would say it’s the business side of things. I think there’s this illusion from the outside that being an artist just means making music. That can certainly be the case, but if an artist wants to have their music heard, they have to see it through the lens of managing a business. Of course it’s a choice and depends on the artists’ goals. But the audience isn’t usually aware of all the work that goes into this side of things, it happens behind the scenes. It takes a huge amount of commitment, investment and time.
And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?
Do it because you love the process, not because you’re searching for outside results. Building artistry takes time, consistency, and not giving up. But if you’re doing it because it’s a part of who you are and you’re enjoying every moment, the rest doesn’t really matter.
