Getting To Know... iSandi

South African singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist iSandi returns with her powerful new single ‘Joina’, a release that blends artistry with purpose and social impact. Created in collaboration with RADA Unearthed, the track forms part of a wider movement using music as a tool for healing, awareness, and positive change.

Rooted in themes of unity, resilience, and collective responsibility, ‘Joina’ addresses the realities of substance addiction while offering a message of compassion and restoration. Sonically, iSandi continues to develop her distinctive style, fusing Afro-experimental textures with Western harmonic influences to create a sound that feels both reflective and expansive.

So with the new single out now, we sat down with her to find out more about her origins and what has been inspiring her most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

Cello has always been my number one love, unfortunately, I didn’t have access to lessons growing up and affordability was also a challenge, so I only began learning it in my adulthood.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

My first love was light classical music (a bit unusual - I know), light rock (in the early 90s I have memories of bands like Pet Shop Boys/ Roxette), then mid/ late 90s, Soul music and dance -pop which was popular in the 90s (Likes of London Beat). But my taste has of course evolved over time.

What was the first album you remember owning?

Toni Braxton : Secrets

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

What A Wonderful World as it has stood the test of time.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

I love to creating ambience, light setting a certain mood- dim lights and candles sometimes and I love working in the early hours of the morning when everybody is asleep- my creativity mode is at peak.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

A mix of artists: French Kiwi Juice (FKJ) The Marias ; Chris Botti and Zonke. I also listen to a lot of ambient instrumental music which influence my creativity.
