6/10
It has been almost 10 years to the day since Gwen Stefani last released a solo album, and while we have had new material from No Doubt in that time, this seems to be the album she wants us to hear. Written and recorded during the aftermath of her break-up with husband Gavin Rossdale, 'This Is What The Truth Feels Like' aims to create a musical backdrop to her emotions at the time and deliver an outlet for her own personal turmoil.
While it may sound like she would just be doing nothing but tearjerker ballads, its still the same old Gwen as this new release is as poppy and peppy as every. The lyrical content may not be its most positive aspect but the variety in production makes it pleasant enough. Taking inspirations from dancehall, hip-hop and electro, the album is a smorgasbord of culture and influence all wrapped up in her typically pop-gloss style.
It may not have the recall of some of her previous work, but still manages to stay interesting throughout and deliver a strong message for those who may be experiencing the same or similar personal situations.
