Hercules & Love Affair - 'Omnion'

6/10

Over their first three albums, Hercules & Love Affair have proven themselves to be one of the great electronic musical innovators of the new century. Constantly pushing the envelope to find new ideas and influences, the outfit now return with their fourth studio album 'Omnion', a record that from the start seems to see themselves as more of a collaborative act these days.

While collaborations were not unusual on their previous releases, this new LP packs them in one after another, allowing the band to almost create a new concept for each guest appearing on the track. The result therefore is a diverse and sometimes untethered full-length, that ultimately tries to create a collection of new and interesting ideas that aren't always as compatible with each other as they probably should have liked.

However, 'Omnion' is still filled with some fantastic ideas, but that doesn't always make for a cohesive and succinct release. The title-track 'Omnion' and the Faris Badwan-featuring 'Through Your Atmosphere' deliver the standout moments on this release, with the rest either being a that classic Hercules sound or something that shouldn't quite be.
