King Nun - 'Mass'

7/10

The journey to the Wandsworth band's debut full-length has been a long and winding one. Having released a string of singles and EPs as far back as 2016, the group's sound has remained fairly consistent since their conception, usually paying homage to the rough yet energetic heyday of the early noughties indie scene. But with all that experience behind them, they have finally found a direction that they can call their own as their debut effort 'Mass' is filled with the same bold and tenacious energy that has made them such a captivating listen these last few years.

It is clear when you switch onto 'Mass' who the band respect most amongst their influences. With clear comparisons to the sounds of early Bloc Party, Maximo Park and The Rakes, King Nun are seeing that these once popular aesthetics rise back into the public consciousness again on their debut record. But rather than simply pay homage to those founding fathers, the band have revamped and added their own flair to the raucous indie sound as this new collection sees the group deliver one ear-pleasing effort after another, something that can appeal to the audience of today as well as appease those older generations.

While indie bands have become ten-a-penny these last few decades, King Nun have made it their mission to stand out from the crowd and that is exactly what this new release sets out to do. 'Mass' is a fun and exciting debut that brings out the best in the group, and will surely see them through many years to come.
