Lottie Gray has spent the last few years building a reputation around emotional directness, and 'The Big Idea' feels like the point where those instincts come together most clearly. Across six tracks, the Manchester-based singer-songwriter moves between folk, Americana, indie-rock and classic pop without ever losing sight of the personal writing at the centre.

What stands out first is the range. ‘Head Down/Hands Up’ opens with a slightly off-kilter charm, pairing jangling guitars with quick, observant lyricism, while ‘Green’ pushes into a more urgent, full-band sound that gives her vocal greater force. The contrast between the two sets the tone for an EP that is comfortable shifting shape from song to song.

And that variety continues through ‘Teeth’, which brings a more reflective atmosphere to the aftermath of a breakup, and ‘Worst Punchline’, where guilt and self-questioning are given more space to breathe. Her strongest moments often come when she resists the temptation to over-explain, trusting smaller emotional details to do the work instead.

‘Bed and Breakfast’ strips things back further, leaning on acoustic instrumentation to explore insecurity and the feeling of being out of place. By the time ‘Keep Me Sane’ arrives, the EP has widened considerably, closing with a more expansive arrangement that gives the project a fitting sense of release.

Recorded between Manchester and mid-Wales with producers Matt Brown and Matt Campbell, 'The Big Idea' benefits from a collaborative band dynamic without losing the intimacy of her songwriting. Seb Murphy, George Fisher-Edwards, Ryan Bee and Ozzi Hunt help give the songs a fuller live feel, but the arrangements remain attentive to the words.

For a debut EP, there's a notable sense of self-awareness here. 'The Big Idea' works because it allows different moods and influences to coexist around a consistent emotional core. Measured, personal and confidently put together, it's a strong introduction to an artist whose greatest strength may be her willingness to keep refining a feeling until it sounds true.
